Iceland Airwaves: The Best Tips for 2008

What we learned from Iceland’s largest music festival:

Don't look so down, Airwaves will be back next year.Iceland rocks. This comes as no surprise to seasoned Icelandic music lovers, but there may be no better city in which to hear music. The vibe downtown is completely welcoming and energetic. Iceland is truely in love with music and the people who make it. Speaking of which…

Listen like a local. Of the 200+ acts that performed over the last few days, about 70% were Icelandic (is anybody not in a band in this country?). Some of the international bands might have drawn bigger crowds, but the local acts more than held their own. Hurray for all the Icelandic bands that don’t know better than to be intimidated! Which leads us to…

Don’t believe the hype. The fact that a large group of people are willing to fly all the way to Iceland to see a particular band play for 45 minutes on a Thursday night does not necessarily make that band great. When the next-big-thing falls flat, it’s good to know that…

There’s never a bad time for an Icelandic hot dog. In fact, they just seem to get better and better the later (or earlier) it gets. By the way, we saw many tourists try to special-order their dogs to avoid unfamiliar sauces. Our advice: just take a chance and get one with everything. You won’t be disappointed. And if you are…

There’s always next year. You’ll hear great music and see amazing shows, but you won’t see it all. There will always be a groundbreaking performance or two that you miss. We officially give you the right to tell people that you saw their show and it shredded your underwear. And don’t worry, they’ll have the festival again next year, and we’ll happily fly you in.

  1. hey erik!
a very interessting article about the festival!
I’m going to be in island from january to april 2008 for a study-exchange-program and I’m already very exited. As I am very into music I have to see icelandic bands! do you know if it’s going to be in this time and is it true, that I have to be 21 to come to the Iceland Airwaves (or go into the clubs where bands play)?
Would be nice if you answer.
    Greetz!

  2. Our livers can only handle one Airwaves per year, Rebecca. However, you will have no problem finding music on any night in Iceland - some of it is even good!
