A bunch of running, concerts, a whispering world record, fireworks, and free waffles. What more could you want?
If there is one thing that Icelanders know, it’s celebration. Iceland is the kind of place where people throw a party because they find soap that matches their towels.
So imagine what can happen when you hold an internationally renowned marathon and a country’s largest cultural celebration on the same day. Basically, it’s the one weekend in Iceland that you don’t want to miss.
There are over 250 scheduled events throughout the city, so our advice would be to make friends with the best looking group of people you can and see where the night takes you!
If you missed the party this year, don’t worry, we hear they might just do it all again in 2008. See you there!

when is the 2008 marathon?
Culture Night and the Reykjavík Marathon always occur right around our computer guru Ómar’s birthday (or the third weekend in August, whichever is easier for you to remember).
Every year I visit Iceland and every year I miss this glorious night. 2007 I was in the North at Stykkisholmur enjoying Danskir Dagar instead of this wonderful occasion.
Caught the highlights on TV the following day but it’s just not the same.
Going back to Iceland again this year but guess what- I will be going earlier than usual and of course thatmeans I’ll be out of the country before you can say- get me another beer- if you please.
It is called Menningarnótt | Culture Night. Here is a link to a Flickr Group with pictures of this event:

I was there last summer and it has been really great, with music, lights fires and a lot of people in the streets.
Something to suggest!
